Acupressure Points for Inducing Labor
The following are specific points to which you can apply acupressure to induce labor.
BL60
The space between the ankle bone and the Achilles tendon is also called the Kunlun, named after an Asian mountain range. A practitioner may use it when the baby gets stuck in an inappropriate position. You may also use this point to get the childbirth process started. The medical practitioner will use his or her thumb and caress that spot for a few minutes. Doing so also reduces labor pain.
SP6
This point is found slightly above the inner lower ankle bone at the back of the calf. The expert will subject the area to pressure using his or her own hands, often using the index finger. After a few seconds, the practitioner will pause for a while and then repeat the process. Doing this is an excellent method of inducing labor fairly fast.
BL67
During the initial stages of labor, experts will recommend the point bladder 67. You will find it at the edge of your last toe on your feet. Compress the spot for about twenty minutes each day, after your due date. Be gentle enough not to hurt yourself as you pinch the area. However, note that the acupressure point is prohibited for mothers with diabetes or any traumatic brain injury. If you also have unusual amniotic fluid, you should also avoid pressure on this area.
BL32
At the base of your back, you will find a dimple. It is called bladder 32. For inducing labor, an expert will gently press on the spot while massaging it. The acupressurist may apply pressure repeatedly until they the desired effect is achieved.
PC8
This point is in the area where your fingers reside when you make a fist. Applying acupressure here can relieve anxiety and also reduce inflammation. Ensure that you massage it for a few seconds. Do that until you feel a warm prickling sensation. Since it can induce labor quickly, make sure that you are near a professional caregiver.
L14
The point called large intestine 14 is at the interval between the thumb and the index finger. Use your other thumb and gently caress this acupressure point. Introduce time intervals in the process: Do it for a minute, pause and then resume for another minute. Research shows it boosts the body’s immunity, regulates muscular tension and induces labor. It can also help during migraines and the flu.
Things to Remember
The application of acupressure will only work for mothers late on their due date. Note that it increases blood flow to your uterus and enhances hormonal responses. It will also increase uterine contractions, so make sure that any decisions you make are also shared with your doctor.
